It might be a little too late for a review, but I feel like sharing my thoughts about this particular indie film I have viewed today. I am referring to this movie called Lovebirds, which is a story of a mother’s disapproval over her discreet son’s decision to embrace homosexuality and come out. Amelia (Boots Anson-Roa) is a loving mother and wife whose denial to her son’s sexual preference has been seriously challenged when her son Mario (Joseph Ison) allows a Spaniard visitor named Alexis (Andres Alexis Fernandez) to stay in their house.

Mario met Alexis via online chatting and they both developed a relationship that is quite common in this day and age. But the problem is that Mario has yet to officially come out to his mother who thought all along that Alexis is a female. So to save their family from embarrassment, Amelia tries to cover up Mario’s affair from her neighbors who seemed really aware about the shenanigans. Ironically enough, Mario’s father (Tommy Abuel) doesn’t have any objections to his own decisions.
Lovebirds will probably bore its audience at the beginning because it actually started off weak, but it eventually recovered towards the end of the film. That welcome party scene at the start was poorly shot that you would feel like you are watching a homemade video.
But overall, I am glad I downloaded this movie because it’s actually something I can relate to. Had Mario existed in real life, he will be the most decent gay guy I knew. I love the fact that despite his disagreements to his mother, he remained polite and respectful. As a matter of fact, I can’t remember he ever protested to whatever she has to say.
Even if I was bored to death at the start of the movie, I still think this one stood out from all the other movies that were shown last year.
