New Television Shows

In the Philippines, we have a very limited option when it comes to local TV programming. In a nutshell, only two local television channels are dominating the entire country and both channels (GMA and ABS-CBN), in my opinion, are copycats of each other. Their programs have similar formats shown simultaneously in parallel timeslots. In other words, if ABS-CBN, for instance, put Project Runway on their 8:00 pm timeslot, GMA will put Stylista on the same timeslot. It’s really, really absurd! I’m happy that TV5 is stepping up lately. I hope they could put a threat to the other gigantic channels and change Philippine television forever. Filipinos also have an enormous inclination towards heavy dramas, therefore making soap operas the most watched TV shows in the Philippines. Yet again, the local channels are giving us no other options. For me, soap opera means substandard programming, and large networks are embracing this inadequacy solely for profits. In this country, having a cable subscription is considered a privilege for those who can afford it. Yet I’m wondering: If cable TV companies can offer services for as low as PhP300.00, why others still choose to stay without cable and watch TV in poor signals?
